Oakmont Hikers
  • The Oakmont Hiking Club was formed in the early 1970’s to provide a hiking experience for Oakmont residents. The object of the Club is to provide hikes tailored to various levels of hiking abilities (see hike categories below) but always in a friendly atmosphere. The Club does not have any set dues but does have a Board of Directors who arrange for hikes and hike leaders.  Most of the weekly club hikes are held in Sonoma, Marin and Napa Counties. In addition the Club has some special events each year, a potluck dinner in January, a picnic bar-b-cue In the summer and two Tri-niters—hiking excursions away from the home counties.  All events are advertised in the Oakmont News and in this web site.
  • NOTE—At times, weather or other circumstances force last minute changes in hikes and sometimes cancellations.

Sept. 4th Hikes
  • Short Hike—The short hike on this date will be to Helen Putnam Park in Petaluma.  This is an interesting hike on good trails.  Although we usually try not to have much elevation gain on short hikes there will be about 500’ gain on this hike but views at the end are worth it and we will take our time. Bring water and a snack and hiking sticks if you wish. We will leave Berger at 9 AM. Hike leader is Chuck Stanley—539-1696.

  • Long Hike—the long hike on this date will be at Pt. Reyes National  Seashore and will be our annual outing to Arch Rock.  This is a beautiful hike along the spine of the Pt. Reyes Peninsula, through fields and woods to the coast and Arch rock for Lunch.  Then back on the Bear Valley trail to the visitors center.  We will use the Meadow and Sky trails to the Coastal trail and Arch Rock.  This is a moderately strenuous hike because of the total distance of 11 miles. Elevation gain is 1300’, plus a few “undulations”.  Bring water, lunch and hiking sticks. We will leave berger promptly at 8:30 AM. Hike leader is Bob Anschicks—538-5134

Sept. 18th Long Hike
  • Sort of a mystery hike in Sugar Loaf State Park.  We will decide on the morning of the hike which trails to use, depending on the weather.  If it is fairly cool  we will park at the Goodspeed Trail Head  and hike up to Gunsight Rock.  Fairly good trail except for some rocky areas.  If it is warmer  we will use the Johnson Ridge trail in Hood Mt. Regional Park which is mainly shady. and with good trails. Either way the hike will be about 7 miles and 2000’ of elevation gain so are rated as fairly strenuous.  Of course the Johnson Ridge Trail has the aggravating 3/10th of a mile on the paved fire road.
  • Bring water, lunch, hiking sticks etc.  Leave Berger promptly at 8:30 AM.  Hike leader is Bob Anschicks, 538-5134.

Tomales Pt. Long Hike Oct. 2nd
  • This is always a popular hike, even though driving distance is a bit farther than normal.  This is at Pt. Reyes  National Seashore in the Thule Elk reserve.  This will be rutting season for the elk so we should see a number of the herds.
  • We start at Pierce Point Ranch and hike the entire trail out to the point and back, about  9 to 9.5 miles round trip.  Good trails with some sandy spots. A lot of flat trail but with some ups and downs.
  • This trail is all exposed, very little shade, and is on the coast, so dress for any type of weather, including a hat  or visor.  Bring water, lunch and hiking sticks (if you wish). We will lunch at the point.
